1B.3: Density Lab

Density is an important property in chemistry. It can be used as a test to help identify a substance. Density is the relationship between the mass and the volume of a substance.

Purpose:

  1. To determine the density of two common liquids: water (H2O) and ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH).
  2. To compare the densities of water and ethyl alcohol.

Materials:

Procedure:

Measure the mass and the volume of three different amounts of water and three different amounts of ethyl alcohol.

Data Analysis:

  1. Make an organized table of results in your lab notebook.
  2. Use a ruler.
  3. Type your results into the computer. We will produce a graph of everyone's results.
  4. When you receive your copy of the graph, explain any relationships you notice.
  5. Write the explanations in complete sentences on looseleaf paper.
