Help at home

RESPITE CARE:  care provided in your home so caregiver can be relieved for short periods of time.  Some age requirements may apply for caregivers and care receivers.

• Alzheimer’s Association 1-800-272-3900 Programs available to give caregivers of Alzheimer/Dementia patients a break.  No age requirements for caregiver.

AIDE SERVICES:

• Lapeer County Senior Programs:  Aide Program - 667-0417
• Lapeer County Senior Programs:  Chore Services - 245-5866 Assists individuals 60+ with household chores, yard care and referral to community agencies.
• Department of Human Services:  Home Help- 667-0800 For ages 18+ on Medicaid and meet medical criteria.  Help with personal care/household chores, provided by person you choose.

Lapeer County Senior Programs:  Geriatric Assessment Program - 667-0417 An in-home visit by a RN and Social Worker, to assess client needs.  Services are arranged based on client need, using existing resources within the county.  Eligibility: age 60 and older.  No fees; donations are accepted.

Valley Area Agency on Aging Care Plus (Waiver) Program - 1-800-978-6275 In-home care for seniors and disabled persons (over age 18) who meet nursing home and financial eligibility requirements.

Hiring a Private Person to give care in your home:   When hiring someone to come into your home, it's advisable to get references and have a written contract.  For a sample caregiver contract and updated list of private individuals interested in providing care - 667-5593 or see Senior Coalition Website at www.lapeer.org/ServiceOrg/SeniorCoalition or see yellow pages under Home Health Services for companies that provide services up to 24 hrs/day.  Cost starts at $12-15 per hour, some discounts for full days.  Some also have nurses and therapists.
