Adult foster Care (AFC) homes are licensed and regulated by the State of Michigan to provide supervision, meals, laundry, and personal care. May be licensed for 1-20 people; may serve elderly, or other populations. Often referred to as homes for aged, group homes or assisted living. AFC homes set their own price, which is not covered by medical insurance. Low-income residents may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income through Social Security. Contact Department of Human Services - Adult Services (667-0800) for current information on licensed Adult Foster Care Homes.
Assisted Living is a catch-all name used by Adult Foster Care homes, senior apartments, nursing homes and others. The State of Michigan does not recognize or license for 'assisted living'. Inquire about what services are included and what license, if any, they have.
Nursing Homes are licensed by Michigan Department of Community Health to provide skilled and custodial care including nursing services and therapy. Medicare and private insurances may pay for a limited time for skilled care. Most stays are considered custodial care which is typically covered only by Medicaid or private funds.
For private facilities, see Yellow pages under 'Nursing Homes'. For facilities outside Lapeer County, contact Lapeer Regional Medical Center case management at 667-5593. For more information and help choosing a nursing home, call Citizens for Better Care 1-800-284-0046 or see Health Care Association of Michigan at www.hcam.org
